Double Exposure

Unit 2

UNIT 2

Statement Of Intent

I'm planning on taking pictures of people, as my unit 2 is going to be about portraiture as I am interested in this type of photography. I'm going to research a couple of artists and look where I would find portrait photography. I'm going to be trying out different lighting to see which one I prefer so I know which type of photo's I will be taking (i.e High key, Low key and Environmental Setting). I'm also going to look at some famous portrait photographers work, i.e David Bailey and Irving Penn and see if I could learn anything on this practice whilst viewing their work.

Research

Portraiture Photography can be found in many places, It could be used in photojournalism, Editorial Photography, Commercial/Advertising Photography, Fine Art Photography and even in some ways Abstract Photography.

Irving Penn - He uses a very clever use of the dark and light, which intern gives the image a very different feel to it and makes the picture unique and his own.

David Bailey - He is similar too Irving Penn, as he doesn't focus at all on the background, just the portrait that he will be taking the photographs of. He also uses the lightness and darkness to make the images more complex and interesting.

MY STUDIO WORK

Whilst Photographing I experimented on changing the high key and low key of the images, I did this by rearranging the light and composition. I have varied the focus points on some of my images but tried too still keep the focus on the portrait. The light and dark contrasts in the photos make the images sharper and more detailed, I like how I blacked out the background so that all you can see is just the portrait in some cases, also how the whole room lit up and looked bright and more alive. I also like how some images look as if they where taken in natural light, yet others it was clear that there was a artificial light in use.

EVALUATION

I produced my work for this unit in a studio-based environment so that I could control the lighting whilst I photographed my subject. I wanted to control the lighting so that I could adjust it too show the definition in the subject’s faces, producing images, which appear to have both natural and artificial light sources with both light and dark backgrounds.

I didn’t chose to research black and white photography artists, whilst looking into portrait photography I just happened too come along a couple of images that where in black and white, which in turn lead me too find 2 amazing portrait photographers, after looking at a variety of portrait images I now believe black and white photography has more interest to the image, it shows great definition in the image, without the tonal qualities, it almost shows its own line quality.

I have chosen to present my final piece online; I feel by doing so it will allow me to broadcast my work in a wider variety in a larger target audience, being able to publish worldwide with little complications and cost.

I find the context of my work is more editorial then other forms of photography. The strengths of my work are that in my images there are a lot of detail shown and I personally think that they are good photographs, which gives me self satisfaction in my own work, although I do believe that I could of done more images and also experimented actually doing my images in black and white.

FINAL

I chose this as my final piece as I just think that it is more aesthetically appealing, I really like the lighting and composition. All the different shades of colour and the tone, showing clearly where the light is coming from, I like how the pose of the subject, really makes his skin capture the light, as the neck and side of the face is bright reflecting the light, but as you look further around the face it go's darker and looks more like its being touched by natural light.

Depth of Field

Depth Of Field

Depth of field is when the focus point is either in the foreground or the background, so that either the foreground is clear and the background is blurred, or the background is clear and the foreground is blurred.

These 2 images were taken from DOFpro.com in the CGI Gallery.

These are my attempts of Depth of Field

ISO

ISO

Laura Hana - This is a really good example of showing how the ISO works, it shows how the higher the ISO the more light sensitive the image is, so if you was in a dark room with poor lighting you would use a higher ISO and vece-versa

MY ISO IMAGES

For these images, in the order from top to bottom i took 2 images on each ISO setting starting from 100-6400.
1&2 - 100 ISO
3&4 - 200 ISO
5&6 - 400 ISO
7&8 - 800 ISO
9&10 - 1600 ISO
11&12 - 3200 ISO
13&14 - 6400 ISO
